Nutritional Education

A fundamental key to positive physical health is gained by eating whole food and getting some kind of exercise at a pace that works for you.

Sometimes it’s difficult to know what foods are good for us and what foods are not. Eating and preparing whole food is a critical part of changing your health in a positive way. The key is knowing where your food comes and what is in it. Atlantic Nutrition is dedicated to helping you clarify this knowledge in a fun and easy way.

Gut Microbiome

If you’re not aware of what you’re consuming, you could be consuming foods that are not ideal for a positive health outcome. Unfortunately, the food we consume can contain pesticides, herbicides, glyphosate, antibiotics, artificial sweeteners, texturizing agents, synthetic colors, heavy metals and other toxic chemicals. These components can have a negative impact on our microbiome.

Let’s discuss our gut microbiome first. Some people don’t realize that we exist with good bacteria in our bodily systems. In fact, you have as many bacteria cells working in your body as you do human cells. It’s literally a 1 to 1 ratio of human to bacteria cells. The good bacteria are your protection from harmful bacteria in our bodies and environment.

Bacteria live in 4 main places: your gut, sinuses, lungs and skin. One of the first things to aim for when making positive health changes is that you work on reducing or eliminating these chemicals that have a negative impact on these good bacteria cells.

A big part of positive health is keeping our good gut bacteria thriving. This can be assisted with consuming higher quality food. This will assist in eliminating some of the bad stuff from entering our bodies, causing damage to our microbiome. So what should you look for?

  • Organic food has become very popular and it’s much easier to find these days.

  • Farmers markets are a great places to explore. It’s a good place to find quality food and it feels good supporting your community.

  • Local egg and meat producers. I’m sure if you look, there’s a good farm nearby that has excellent quality choices.

Environment

As important as quality food is to positive health, it’s important to protect the good bacteria that exist in sinuses and lungs. Using harsh chemicals and sprays for cleaning your house can have a negative impact on the microbiome that protects your sinuses and lungs. Some of these components are ammonia, bleach and some solvents. Consider removing these harsh chemical cleaners and sprays from your home. Trying to use more natural cleaners can have a positive impact, by not damaging the microbiome in the lungs and sinuses.

We can't forget skin health. Try to keep the good bacteria that exist on your skin healthy. Unfortunately, many of the soaps, shampoos, deodorants, toothpaste and beauty products we use contain triclosan, phthalates, and certain fragrance ingredients that damage our skin microbiome. There are so many good choices for skin and oral care products available that are better options. It is very easy to make the upgrade to your routine and maintain positive skin health.
